"Jai Santoshi Maa" is a 1976 Indian Hindi language film based on the life of Santoshi Mata, who is worshiped as the Hindu goddess of contentment. It was directed by Ravikant Nagaich and stars Hema Malini, Prem Nath, Shashikala, Anita Guha and Durga Khote in lead roles. The movie follows the story of Santoshi Mata's birth to her final ascension into heaven along with her mortal husband Vishnu. She has to go through many difficulties like human-animal transmutation, demonic possession and conspiratorial killings before finally attaining divinity. After its release, the film was met with positive reviews and box office collections. It is the 3rd highest grossing Hindi film of 1976 and 10th highest grossing Bollywood film of the decade 1970s. The movie inspired two sequels: "Jai Santoshi Maa" (1975) and "Jai Santoshi Maa (2006)", both directed by Naich. Its music composed by Ravindra Jain became an all-time hit and was declared a semi-classical album. Bhajan ""Chandi Ki Daal Mein"" sung by Kishore Kumar became evergreen and still popular in India even today after 40 years since its release in 1976. The movie opens up with a voice-over of the story-teller, who says that wherever there is devotion, there is Santoshi Mata. He then goes on to narrate her story from the time she was born as the daughter of a humble Brahmin family in Dholakpur. She was specially loved by her grandfather as he believed that she had all the virtues of a perfect woman – loyalty, obedience and devotion – and would go on to become a devoted wife to some lucky man one day. As a little girl, Santoshi would sing songs of devotion to her family. One day her parents receive news from the palace that the king has a newborn son and is looking for a suitable name for him. Her father, a Brahmin priest by profession, proposes the name of his own daughter – Santoshi. The king is delighted with this suggestion and names his child as Santosh – a royal way to greet, praise and wish happiness to his daughter-in-law. After some time, an astrologer predicts that Prince Santosh would be killed by a poisonous snake bite before being able to reach manhood. The king is heartbroken and places his son under strict protection. Santoshi also feels very sad at her inability to meet her beloved prince. Santoshi's grandfather consoles her by saying that she can pray to God to ensure that Prince Santosh lives a happy life. Her prayers work and the prince becomes strong and hale after his snake-bite. After attaining maturity, Prince Santosh decides to tour the kingdom with his friends. They stop at Dholakpur to pay respect to Santoshi Mata's grandfather, who blesses them on their journey. Prince Santosh invites all of them for an evening feast at the palace grounds so that they may rest before resuming their journey next morning. cfa1e77820
